S ince it was first opened by Anton Wilbert in the late 1830's, Wilbert Funeral Services has steadily grown. Our founder built and sold coffins to start the business.
Anton had seven sons who founded a corporation known as A. Wilbert and Sons, Lumber and Shingles Company.
After Anton's death, his son Joseph took helm of the funeral business. Then Joseph's nephew, the late John W. Wilbert followed in his footsteps. John Sr. bought the funeral home business from the Wilbert Corporation in 1940.
John soon formed three other charters, Wilbert Service Insurance Company in 1941, Wilbert Industrial Life Insurance Company in 1948, and Wilbert Life Insurance Company in 1956.
In 1965 a 37-acre area was purchased on Bayou Jacob Road which has become the beautiful Grace Memorial Park. Grace also owns a division called Grace Marble and Granite that manufactures concrete burial vaults. The newest addition to Grace divisions is Grace Crematory located within Grace Memorial Park.
Wilbert was the first funeral home in the United States to have its own patented service mark, which appears on our company vehicles and is used as our logo, with the words,
"Established in 1850."
The numerals 1850 appear on license plates and are used in the telephone number for the Port Allen home, 383-1850 and Plaquemine home 687-1850.
"The past is inspiration for the future." John Wilbert, Jr.
